Millard Fillmore's first address in Buffalo was 180 Franklin Street, where he lived with his wife Abigail. After he left the office of President in 1853, he returned to Buffalo. He remarried following the death of Abigail, sold the above house and moved into the mansion on Niagara Square later known as "The Castle." The above house stood for many more years, its front remodeled by 1915. When it was demolished is not known.
The Buffalo YWCA constructed its new building at 190 Franklin Street in 1952. It was 3-story, 70,000 square feet and included a swimming pool, gymnasium, weight room, locker rooms, a ballroom with a stage, commercial format kitchen and offices and classrooms. By 2006, YWCA had changed its mission from providing physical fitness programs to working toward empowerment of women and social justice. Their facility at 190 Franklin no longer met the organization's goals and it was closed in January, 2006.
In July, 2006, the Buffalo Academy of Sciences Charter School announced that it will move into the building at the start of the 2007-2008 school year, after renovations to 190 Franklin. The building was purchased for $650,000 (less than half the asking price) by the New York City-based Apple Educational Services, which will lease it to the charter school.
